HOW TO DEVELOP A SOUND PRAYER LIFE – Tunde Korede

Paul spoke in tongues more than them all! He had a prayer life!

Daniel prayed three times a day!

Cornelius prayed REGULARLY (Acts 10:2). And through him the gospel came to the Gentiles.

Jesus was addicted to prayer! He once did a personal all-night prayer.

Abraham built altars where he often commune with God! He had a prayer life!

Peter had a prayer life! He once went to the rooftop to pray while he was hungry.

The early Church was given to the WORD and PRAYER

(1) STUDY EXTENSIVELY ON THE SUBJECT OF PRAYER

Take time to read the Word and take note of those who communed with God on a consistent basis during their lifetime. Buy books that will stir you up to pray. Listen to teachings that deal with the subject of prayer. If you must have a prayer-life, you must be a friend of the Scriptures.

Someone said after he was done reading the book of Acts, he prayed for over 8 hours at a stretch, which he had never done before. I once read a book by Heward Dag-Mills titled “Quiet Time,” and that was how I started praying consistently each day for hours.

There are teachings you can watch on YouTube that will fill you with an insatiable urge to pray. There was a time I downloaded a teaching on prayer online and the next time, I was on the mountain praying.

It is not good to pray for 7-8 hours one day and stop praying the following day. Hence, if you must have a sound prayer-life, continue to listen to teachings that will spur you to pray more. Therefore, avoid satanic teachings that talks down on the power of prayer.

Listen to this, there is no one that will not pray. So, those who are not praying now, will definitely pray later.

(2) HAVE FRIENDS WHO HAVE STRONG PRAYER LIFE.

Sincerely, a sound prayer life is contagious! The friends Daniel had were prayer warriors too. That was why he could tell them to join him in prayer when there was trouble (DAN. 2:17-18). If you live with people who pray consistently, you can be infected with the Spirit of prayer.

Avoid friends who keep discouraging you whenever you pray. Never subscribe to the belief that says spending LONG HOURS in the place of prayer is a waste. So, avoid people who say such.

In fact, the Bible teaches that we are to pray without CEASING. That means there is no SPECIFIC time/SPACE given to us to stop praying. We are to pray and not FAINT.

Even if you’re not getting the results yet. Keep pressing! It was not when Elijah started praying that rain began to fall. It was when he TARRIED THERE FOR LONG till the seventh time that the rain came (1 Kings 18:43-44).

(3) BE DISCIPLINED

Schedule the time you will be having a time to pray every day. And let nothing change it. Have a personal time you have devoted UNTO God, which you’re going to spend with Him each day. This was how Prophet Daniel was able to pray three times a day. Be rigid in this aspect. If you’re consistent with this, you’ll begin to have angelic encounters like Daniel and Cornelius.

Keep to that time! If it is midnight, stick to it. But start gradually till you start spending hours all alone in God’s presence. People whom God used mightily had a strong personal prayer life.

Cornelius had a prayer life because it is said of him that he prayed REGULARLY! He was praying by 3pm when an angel visited him. That means he had time he scheduled to commune with God. If you lack discipline, your prayer life will be shallow.

(4) ASK HIM TO GIVE YOU A ‘BURDEN’ THAT WILL MAKE YOU SEEK HIM ALL THE DAYS OF YOUR LIFE.

A man without burden will never have a prayer life. There should be something in your heart that pushes you to pray. That thing is called ‘burden.’ If that thing isn’t there, you will never be prayerful.

May the Lord help you to stay more in His presence. May you begin to have a strong prayer life henceforth.
