THE GLOOMY CORRIDORS (Episode 39) – Olumide Fatunsin

Debby was reluctant to answer him but he insisted. When Debby had gathered courage to speak, she brought out a book she had been reading and opened to page 64 where the author wrote about hiding certain information and secrets about oneself until after marriage. Dennis collected it from her and read a portion in the book,

“And as they came down from the mountain, Jesus charged them, saying, Tell the vision to no man, until the Son of man be risen again from the dead.”

Jesus charged the disciples to hide the vision they received on the mount of transfiguration from the other disciples and people. Don’t frighten your fiancé/fiancée before your wedding day. Learn to keep certain secrets no matter the magnitude. Wisdom is profitable to direct…”

Dennis quickly returned the book to her. His reaction corroborated her own thought concerning the author.

“One of the easiest ways to destroy one’s spiritual stand is to read every book. Some authors are ready to sugarcoat their writings in order to lure people to buy their erroneous books. I once read a book where the author trivialised masturbation. Keeping secrets during courtship is a wrong signal to lasting joy and peace in marriage.” Dennis declared.

“My God! Why are some people so callous?” Debby said disgustingly.

Dennis shared the story of one of his friends,

“Lekan and I graduated from the same University. He was a brilliant student with bevy of beauties around him both day and night. I was envious at a time but was cautioned by my roommate to beware. He decided to pick one of them to be his future wife. Becky built a wall of jealousy around him which made it difficult for some of us to associate with him. Immediately after the national service, he got married. A lot of things happened where he served but he deliberately kept it away from Becky who served in another state. I advised him to reveal everything to her but he waved it aside…”

“What did he do?” She asked.

Dennis sighed and continued, “He promised to marry one of the ladies who served in the same secondary school.”

“So? It isn’t a big deal.”

“Debby, let me finish the story.”

*Ok, go ahead storyteller…” Debby said as she endeavoured to come out of her shell.

Dennis laughed and continued the story,

“Pamela was the only child of her parents and they were so eager to support him and send them abroad. However, Lekan siphoned her money and absconded after the national service leaving no trace or contact. Also, Lekan extracted the available juice from her body with no trace of virginity or dignity again. I warned him against his action but he told me he had already gained from her life. Later, I challenged him to reveal everything to Becky but he ignored it as well. The most shocking thing that happened to him on his wedding day was the letter he received.”

“A letter? Who sent it?”

“Pamela! She told him to be prepared for a long battle.” Dennis said.

“My God! That’s serious.”

“He still refused to disclose it to his wife. It was from one miscarriage to another until they came to Jesus Christ after five years. Whenever he saw the lady in his dream, there would be evil occurrence in his life or hers. I remembered how he was worried sharing his experience with me. I still reminded him to share it with his wife but he didn’t. Do you know that the very day he revealed everything to her marked the beginning of deliverance to them. The same Becky she had been hiding the secret from turned out to be the person God used to break the spiritual yoke upon them.” Dennis narrated.

“He confessed to her after they were converted and became born again through the blood of Jesus Christ. God helped Becky to contact Pamela who then released him from her heart. They apologised to her and she forgave them.”

“Does it mean that she manipulated them?” She asked anxiously.

“No! There’s something called nemesis. You don’t have to be a witch to punish someone. Whatever evil a person has committed has a way of blocking one’s progress in life. When they asked her, she told them she didn’t do anything against them but that his action brought terrible pain and tears to her and her parents. Since then, I have made up my mind to reveal everything to my future wife. In conclusion, sin and evil thrive in secrecy.” Dennis explained.

“You see why I told you about my past. I don’t want to hide anything, I mean anything.” Debby told him.

Dennis cleared his throat with a deceitful smile, “I have a confession too.”

“Please, go ahead.” Debby said with all seriousness.

“I’m sorry for what I’m about to say. I don’t even know how to say it…”

“Feel free. Please, speak your mind.” Debby encouraged him.

“Debby, I didn’t know how it happened. I would have avoided it but it still happened. I’m really sorry.”

Debby was becoming apprehensive while trying to assure him of her understanding.

“Dennis, say whatever you want to say and silent the devil “

“Ok. Thank you for your understanding. I ate Pizza de Pollo (Chicken pizza) this afternoon and I want to eat now.” Dennis said with laughter.

Debby didn’t know when she tapped his broad shoulder and they laughed it off. They went to a nearby restaurant to eat and Debby really enjoyed the beginning of the new phase in her life.

Pastor Helen was on the line with Lisa when she got home Anne and Charlie welcomed her and continued eating at the dining table.

“Pastor, I’m yet to decide on the next step to take. I’m still praying to God to help me. It isn’t easy to accommodate him just like that. Seven years is a long period.”

Anne and Charlie looked at their mother who was lying on the sofa. After she ended her call, she dropped her phone on the center table. She greeted them and began to climb up the stairs. Within fraction of a second…
