And if we know that He hears us, whatever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we have asked of Him. 1 John 5:15 NKJV

This is undoubtedly one of the secrets to enjoying steady answers to your prayers all the time. You must be specific in your requests whenever you approach God in prayers. When your prayers are ambiguous that is, they’re not definite then there is no guarantee of any answer from God. God wants your prayers to be specific not ambiguous. There are a lot of believers who have known the Lord for many years and are well advanced in terms of age but they still sound like small children when they pray. This is becaue they’ve never grown in their prayer life, and therefore they still pray only general, childlike prayers that beseech God to bestow His blessings on them and those they love. Of course, it’s good to ask for God’s blessing and to be childlike in our faith, but God pleads with His people to get specific with Him when they pray!

Looking at our anchor text this morning, the word translated ‘petitions’ in the original text emphatically informs us that our Heavenly Father wants us to get very specific when we pray to Him. The Greek word translated ‘petitions’ actually denotes a specific, exact, explicit, precise, detailed request. This request is so in-depth, thorough, and comprehensive that there is no room for misunderstanding exactly what has been asked. This is why the King James translators translated it as the word “petition.” It paints the picture of a prayer so detailed and explicit that it is like a bona fide “petition” that has been prepared and submitted before God, the Governor of the Universe.

The Bible is filled with examples of people who were downright specific in their requests to God and they all received answers to their prayers. When Abraham’s servant was to get wife for Isaac in Genesis 24, the Bible says he stood by the well and prayed in verse 14 exactly the kind of woman he wanted for Isaac. He was so specific in his prayers that he had not finished the prayer when the answer showed up in the person of Rebecca(vs15). Another example was when the wedding ran low on wine in John 2, Mary wasn’t content to say, “Help us, Jesus.” She was specific: “They have no more wine” (John 2:3). And they received the miracle of new wine. In Paul’s letter to the Church at Ephesus, he told them the exact prayers he has been praying for them (Eph 1:16-23; 3:14-22). Likewise, in chapter 6, he told the church the prayers they should be praying for him: that utterance be given to him so he can boldly make Known the mystery of the gospel.

When I was led by God to start our ministry in a particular city in my country, I told God the kind of facility we wanted and the location it should be and we got it exactly the way we prayed. Also, when we were planning to buy our own landed property, I wanted a massive land that is not fragmented and God gave us exactly what we requested of Him. Beloved, your prayers will enjoy a new level of results if only you will decide to be specific in your requests to God. Vague, general prayers may be cute for a little child, but as you grow in your walk with God, He expects you to be specific and exact in the requests you bring before Him.

So when you make your requests known to Him, get as specific and detailed as you can. I suggest that you even think it through, write it down on a piece of paper, and then submit it as your “petition” to God. You’ll only experience discernible answers to prayer if you get specific when you pray. So make this the day you decide you are stepping up higher in your prayer life! It’s time to become very specific when you come boldly before the Father’s throne of grace to receive mercy and grace to help in your time of need (Hebrews 4:16)!

PRAYERS
Heavenly Father, today I come to You, thanking You for the Holy Spirit who leads me and guides me into all truth. Your Word is filled with promises that meet every need in my life. From this moment forward, I am very specific and exact when I pray and I release my faith to receive answers to my prayers, in Jesus Mighty Name. Amen.

KEEP IN MIND
Your requests should always be specific, exact, explicit, precise and detailed when presented to God.
