THE BEAUTY OF GRACE (1) – Dr. Chris Okafor

2 SAMUEL 9: 1-9

KEY VERSE: (2 Sam. 9:7).
“And David said unto him, Fear not: for I will surely shew thee kindness for Jonathan thy
father’s sake, and will restore thee all the land of Saul; thy father; and thou shalt eat bread at my table continually”

The emergence of David as King of Israel after the death of Saul, no doubt, sent fears down the spine of anybody from the household of Saul. In his “hideout” Mephibosheth, the son of Jonathan and grandson of Saul, was informed that the king wanted to see him. What else, if not death, could he expect from a man who was treated with unprecedented cruelty by his grandfather? David noticed his nervousness as he arrived, and said to him, “Do not fear for I will show you kindness for the sake of your father Jonathan.” The King further told him that he would restore all the landed property that had belonged to his grandfather, Saul. Moreover, he would not return to where he came from but would live with him in the palace and eat from the same dining table with him though crippled on both legs.
This was beyond the lame man’s wildest imagination. “Who is your servant that you should show such kindness to a dead dog like me?” he asked in utter bewilderment. Humanly speaking, Mephibosheth did not deserve what he got but grace located him. Grace is the kindness shown to someone who does not deserve it. In the twinkling of an eye, Mephibosheth, the lame man became Mephibosheth the great man. Grace turned him from a political refugee to a power broker. He was transformed from an ordinary citizen to a member of the royal family.
We were all dead in sin and transgression, we were a people separated from God and excluded from citizenship in Israel and foreigners to the covenants of the promise without hope and without God (Eph. 2:1, 12). But God who is rich in mercy changed our status. By grace, we are not just God’s children but we are joint heirs with His son Jesus (Rom. 8:17).This call is for holy and godly living in appreciation of this great grace. To return back to sin after we have been saved from it is ingratitude and an abuse of grace.

G R A C E N A T I O N T H O U G H T:
We are not just children of God but even joint heirs with His Son, Jesus Christ.

Father, thank you for your grace that has made me a joint heir with your son, Jesus.
