An Ibibio proverb states that, “if you wash your hands well, you will eat with elders”. A wise man once opined that you are just 4 people away from anybody you want to meet in this world.
Access determines assets. Access affects acceptance. After having God, it is important to have access to men and women that matter to your life and destiny.
Jesus Christ grew in favour with God and man; Samuel the Prophet had favour with God and man; Daniel had favour with God and the 4 kings of Babylon; the Church in Acts of the Apostles had favour with God and the people.
A certain lawyer had little or no clientele in his chambers and life became so tumultuous and difficult to the point that feeding and paying bills was an issue and he approached one of the leading lawyers in his city for assistance. The senior and more successful lawyer paid him a visit in his chambers and stood with him outside the chambers for quite a while and many passersby saw them. After the senior lawyer left, he had a massive visit of clients that amazed him. In his bewilderment, bemusement and consternation, he called the senior lawyer to share the good news and the senior lawyer told him that he advertently stood with him for people to see, thereby endorsing him to the community.
The following are ways to have access to elders and great people.
- BE RESPECTFUL
Respect great people and honour them. It is fools that refer to honour as hero worshipping. The food of elders is respect and honour.
Whether in ministry, business or career, no great man wants to be disrespected or insulted. When you respect and honour elders, they’ll draw you close and open up to you. Otherwise, they’ll resent you.
In the medical profession, there’s respect. In the legal profession, there’s respect. Judges attend to cases in court based on order of seniority of the lawyers present.
- BE HUMBLE
God resists the proud. Great men also resist proud people. Truly great people are humble. Humility is the hallmark of greatness. When you are in the midst of important personalities, reduce your talking and do more of listening. Ask relevant questions and don’t discuss freely as though you’re with your mate.
Don’t brag about your personal achievements in the midst of elders and great people.
- LEARN TO KEEP SECRETS AND BE DISCREET
In the course of relating with great people, you may get to see and know things about them that may surprise, disgust or even annoy you but wisdom demands that you keep sealed lips. It is foolishness to be a talkative person.
If you are flippant and a gossip, you will lose access and relevant connections. When you expose the weaknesses and failings of great men, people may cheer you at the beginning but these are likely people that will not add any value to your life.
- BE SERVICE ORIENTED
Service is the ladder to the top. If you are not faithful in another man’s business, who will give you your own. Look for a great man and serve and you open your doors to meet other great people.
In politics, most drivers, personal assistants and servants of great politicians ended up in great positions in society because service gives access and connections.
- DISCOVER AND DEVELOP YOUR GIFT
A man’s gift will make room for him and bring him before great men. A gift is like a precious stone, it shines anyway it turns.
Discover the potentials in you and develop it and great men will look for you.
- BE DILIGENT
A man that is diligent in his business will stand before kings and not before mean men.
Diligence entails hardwork, discipline, excellence and being meticulous. Do your work well and great men will look for you.
- SURPRISE GREAT MEN AND ELDERS WITH GIFTS
Great men are constantly besieged by requests for assistance on a regular basis. Therefore, anybody that gives a powerful person a gift has created a special place for himself in the great person’s life.
- DON’T LOOK DOWN ON PEOPLE
Don’t look down on anybody. That poor person around you could link you to someone that will link you to the great person you want to meet.
It was Naaman’s house girl that connected him to Prophet Elisha.
The world is intricately interconnected.
- HAVE INTEGRITY
If you go about betraying and cheating people, you will lose contacts. Nobody wants to hang around a chest and wicked person.
- CARRY THE OIL OF FAVOUR ON YOUR HEAD
Favour is the flavour and savour of life. A life of favour is an attractive and magnetic life.
When you carry the oil, fragrance and aroma of favour, great people begin to look for you and doors begin to open for you effortlessly.
