(Ephesians 4:31-32) Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice. Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you
Humility is not a lack of confidence or a low opinion of yourself (see Matthew 11:29 and John 14:6), humility is simply the opposite of selfishness and empty conceit (see Philippians 2:3-4 and Romans 12:3). Submitting to authority is a good way to show humility. As a believer, you are to be submissive to both spiritual and constituted authority (see 1 Peter 2:18).Humility before God is not complete until there is also humility before men. Jesus was derided by the Pharisees for socializing with the poor and those of lowly state. Our culture is very status-conscious and people naturally want to socialize upward. Resist the temptation of being partial to those with status or wealth and purposely associate with people of lower status than you (read Luke 7:36-39).
Ways to show humility:
- Acknowledge your fault (James 3:2, James 5:16): A true test of our willingness to humble ourselves is being willing to share with others the weaknesses we confess to God.
2 Take wrong patiently (1 Peter 3:8-17): This is a difficult one. When something is unjust people want to react and rectify it. However, patiently responding to unjust accusations and actions of others demonstrates your strength of godly character and provides an opportunity to put on humility.
- Choose to serve others (Philippians 1:1): When we serve others, we are serving God’s purposes in their lives. Doing so reduces your focus on yourselves and builds the kingdom of God instead of the kingdom of self.
- Be quick to forgive (Matthew 18: 21-35): Forgiveness is possibly one of the greatest acts of humility. To forgive is to acknowledge a wrong that has been done to you and also to further release your right of repayment for the wrong. Forgiveness is denial of self, it is not insisting on your way and your justice.
Saying negative things about others tries to put us up and brings others down, which is a form of pride (see Ephesians 4:31-32). Child of God, avoid pride. Speaking well of others edifies them and builds them up instead of us. Make sure, however, that what you say is not intended as flattery.
Meditation: Humility before God is not complete until there is also humility before men.
