I am kind of a nature man and tend to appreciate the work of God in nature and their varied beauties. They inspire me to meditate on God and just feel good. For that reason, I like seeing the varieties of plants and animals and appreciating their uniqueness, and I enjoy looking at beautiful natural sceneries and landscapes. It also manifests in an attraction to astronomy and excitement for documentaries on heavenly bodies and the universe. Psalm 104, together with a few other psalms around that area, is one of my favourite psalms because it outlines the wisdom and glory of God in his creations.
Yesterday evening as I went out visiting, the sun was just in front of me, just setting, and the beautiful view of the sunset over my hometown caught my eye. So I took these photo shots. Passers-by were staring at me probably wondering why a young man like me would be holding up his phone before his face to take a shot on a double-lane road. It didn’t matter and I didn’t care; it was a beautiful sight, serene and peaceful. It seemed to pour pure delight in my soul.
As I appreciated the beauty of the sight, Psalm 19:1 came to mind: The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky above proclaims his handiwork.
I thought about the greatness of the God who made it and all other things and thought about how he stretches the heavens like a tent (Psalm 104:2). “For the gods of the peoples are worthless idols, but the LORD made the heavens.” Psalm 96:5.
I thought, “the God who made the sun must be infinitely bigger than the sun; the God who made the heavens must be infinitely bigger than the heavens; the God who made the universe must be infinitely bigger than the universe.”
How great is our God!
Then I thought about one more thing: the sunset of life. Just like the sun rises in the morning to do its work throughout the day, continuously growing in strength, on a bright day, reaching the peak of its impact, then declines until it sets, so is our life – everyone of us. We are born, then we grow and do our activities and have very many experiences – then sunset. For everyone of us, sunset is coming. Did you know that? This life of ours will come to an end one day.
We live, say go to school or not; then pursue money or whatever are your interests; then marry or not; then follow your pursuits in life and leave your mark in life big or small (or none at all); then do things and build things more or less than others – do all sorts of things and have varieties of experiences; then death. And then what? Then what, my friend? Do you think of what follows after the sunset of your life? Well the word of God says, it is appointed for men to die once, but after this the judgment. (Hebrews 9:27)
Someday you will wake up and face judgment for how you lived in the body, and receive the rewards or damnations for how we lived. Then eternity, my friend. After your sunset eternity continues. Read it again and let that sink in. You will spend it in heaven or you will spend it in hell. If you don’t end up in heaven, you will surely end up in hell – either way forever.
Are you preparing for it? Make sure you are at peace with your maker now. Being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. Choose Christ now, and make sure you are living in Him.
Sunset is coming. Then what, my friend?
