A POLE IN THE DARK (Episode 13) – Olumide Fatunsin

They heard the heavy footsteps coming towards the bookshelf. Angela saw the man faintly holding something in his hand. She knew the game was up when a book fell from the bookshelf. She almost screamed when he bent down to pick it.

Then he hid something among the books and left. Angela was curious to know what he put there and braved the tense atmosphere to search for it. She was shocked to find the duplicate key to her main door. Without wasting time, she hid it and waited for the next action. Camel who was still exhausted sat there wearily.

Thereafter, Angela heard the voice of Tony and Leah which prompted her to come out of her hiding place. She opened the door gently and saw Matt pointing his pistol on Tony’s head. Fear gripped her as she watched the awful drama. She saw how Leah’s hands were tied and were led downstairs by the men. She wanted to expose herself and damn the consequences but something held her back.

When she realised the danger lurking around her life and house, she decided to flee. When she noticed they had gone, she went to the bathroom to search for any clue. She burst into tears when she discovered they were tricked with the Jelly-like substance and why all the problems had befallen her. She quickly went inside her bedroom to pick some valuable things. She was so engrossed in the packing while Camel stood at the door watching her.

“Are you Angela?”

She didn’t respond as she wanted to leave before the police arrived.

“Are you Angela Daniel?”

She was amazed to hear him calling her maiden name. She stopped to ask him how he got to know her name. When he began to narrate, she interrupted him.

“I don’t want to have anything to do with the police. I want to leave right now.”

She pulled her luggage and went downstairs. She looked behind her and saw Camel still standing in front of her bedroom.

“Don’t you want to escape? Your captors have gone. Hurry up!”

“I have sworn to do their biddings.”

“C’mon, let’s go! Hurry up!”

“I was rescued when I travelled through the desert to reach Europe. It’s my turn to sacrifice my freedom. Leave me alone!” Camel shouted.

Angela pleaded with him to seize the opportunity to flee but he refused. As soon as she stepped out, two policemen stood in front of her. Angela nearly fell due to the shock. She was torn between two thoughts to either expose her ordeal to the police or to shut her mouth.

“Hello! We received an emergency call.”

“Oh, there’s no problem. I’m…I want… I’m trying to…” She spoke incoherently.

They went inside to ascertain the true situation. As soon as they entered…
