VOYAGE WITH THE CAPTAIN (Episode 18) – Olumide Fatunsin

The phone rang again. Sophia realised it was Stella’s phone.

While she was trying to find out the caller, the motorcyclist hit Vincent with the glass cup and fled.

He tried to open the door but it had already been locked by Vincent. He tried to break it but he couldn’t.

Vincent stood in front of him holding his belt while Sophia was shaking her head in pity for the mistake he made.

“Please, don’t hit me with the belt. I am beltophobia and slapophobia.” He pleaded.

She looked at Vincent who was still furious.

“Vincent, he coined those words. No belt and No slap.”

He ignored her and began to beat him with his belt and slap him simultaneously until he couldn’t bear it anymore.

He dragged him into another room and locked him there.

Sophia waited for him to calm down before asking him some questions.

“What should we do now?”

He didn’t answer as he leaned against the wall.

“Who is his boss? I mean, how did our paths cross?”

He didn’t answer but he was tapping his left index finger against the wall.

“How can we rescue my sister?”

He stooped down to pick a piece of the broken glass.

She watched him as he examined it and whispered some words.

“Hello Mister, please say something.”

He went to pick a long sweeping broom to pack the broken pieces into a packer.

Before he left for the kitchen, he observed the broken pieces again.

“Are the broken pieces of glass more important than my questions?” she asked.

He looked at her and said,

“How can a shattered life be mended again? Like these sharp broken pieces, a frustrated life can hit back at anything and anyone.”

She thought for a while and asked further,

“Meaning? A shattered life? How?”

“You have been pushed to the wall by your enemies and it is time to rise up against them.” He answered.

There was a pin drop silence and she then spoke,

“Who will help me? Everything is against me and my sister is captured by these unknown enemies. When will my light break forth?”

He went to empty the packer and brought it to her again,

“Here is the packer. Empty packer free of broken pieces of glass. You need to empty your mind of past failures and adversities.”

She nodded in agreement.

“Start afresh with a renewed courage to secure the release of your sister and leave your town for another city. You will have to cross both familiar and strange barriers before reaching your destination.” He continued.

“You have to reach a stage in life where “enough is enough” will be a tormenting thought both day and night. You must stop running but face your challenge once and for all.”

She gave a wide yawn signalling a tired day but paid rapt attention to what he was saying.

“My wife will give you more details when you meet again. As for this motorcyclist, we will extract more information from him. There is a bedroom upstairs where you will sleep and I will watch over him.” He concluded.

“Thank you very much, Mr Vincent. I will rise up and face my challenge once and for all. Thank you once again.” She said while yawning.

They went upstairs. He showed her the bedroom, closed the door behind him and came downstairs.

He went to check the room where the motorcyclist was locked up and found him fast asleep. He locked it and checked the other rooms before retiring to sleep on the sofa.

He looked at the wall clock and it was already past midnight. He gave a long yawn while rubbing his heavy eyes.

As he sat on the sofa, the motorcyclist’s phone beeped.

“Where are you? Where is the captive? We are waiting at the mission ground.”

He read the text message and thought on his next move.

He sent a message to his wife and then lay on the sofa. After few minutes, he was in the dream land.

When it was exactly 3 am, someone opened the door…
