Six Authorities You Must Submit To As A Christian – Tunde Korede

Submission is the act of accepting or yielding to a superior force or authority of another person. It means recognizing authority and paying due respect to it. God instituted hierarchy in His creation on earth, even in heaven.

Therefore, He detests rebellion and encourages submission. In God’s plan, people who rebel against authorities should be punished. However, honour is a pathway to a life of greatness and limitless success. Hence, we need to recognize divine authorities instituted by God below;
Please, read Romans 13:1-7.

(1) Rulers: (1 Peter 2:13):

Submit yourselves for the Lord’s sake to every authority instituted among men: whether to the king, as the supreme authority.

Here, authorities refer to kings, chiefs, politicians and constituted authorities (Acts 23:5). God’s Word does not imply that we should disrespect or dishonor those in the position of power because they are unbelievers. Whether they are believers or not, submission to them is a matter of necessity.

Also, as believers, we are not to curse them but to pray for them (1 Tim. 2:1-2). We should desist from speaking disparagingly about them, but we are to place them in God’s hand as we pray.

Nevertheless, we are not bound to obey all the decrees of the people in the position of authority. We can only obey their directives that are in consonant with God’s Word. We are to vehemently disobey them when the decree they publish or enact is against God’s Word.

The Apostles chose to obey God rather than men when they were commanded not to preach the gospel anymore (Acts 4:19). Summarily, we can follow them as they do not contradict God’s dictates.

(2) Spiritual Leaders (1 Timothy 5:17):

The elders who direct the affairs of the church well are worthy of double honour, especially those whose work is preaching and teaching.

Spiritual leaders deserve to be respected. Although, we believe in the same Lord; Jesus Christ and we are equal in His sight, because the Lord does not show favoritism (Acts 10:34).

Hierarchically, there are those whom God has placed over us, by divine calling, to labour in the Word and prayer, so that we can grow and mature in the things of God. We must submit to these people and honour them.

Submit to teachers of the Word, Pastor, Prophet, Apostle, Evangelist and every other vessels God is using to edify and build you. They deserve double honour.

(3) Your Husband (1 Corinthians 11:3):

Now I want you to realize that the head of every man is Christ, and the head of the woman is man, and the head of Christ is God.

Civilization cannot alter the truth of God’s Word. No matter what young people say these days, God’s Word is settled in heaven forever. Every woman who wants to please the Lord must be able to submit to her spouse.

If you cannot submit to a man, there is no point getting married to such a man. In like manner, men should also love their spouse. If a man loves his wife, he will not beat her up. Therefore, Love is the fulfillment of the law.

(4) Masters (Ephesians 6:5):

Slaves, obey your earthly masters with respect and fear, and with sincerity of heart, just as you would obey Christ.

As a believer, if you are under the leadership of any person, be submissive to such person. Of a truth, there are people placed over us, whether at work or in church.

So, we need to serve them wholeheartedly and submit to them.

(5) Parents (Colossians 3:20):

Children, obey your parents in EVERYTHING, for this pleases the Lord.

There are times our parents do certain things that infuriate us, but we are not supposed to disrespect them. We need to submit to them in humility.

The covenant pillar placed before us to live long on earth is absolute submission to authority. Let’s obey them as they instruct us in the way of the Lord.

(6) Elderly Ones (1 Peter 5:5):

Young men, in the same way BE SUBMISSIVE to those WHO ARE OLDER…

You need to respect everyone that is older than you. Submission is not to be done to your parents alone, but to everyone older than you. Submit to elderly ones. Those who are older than you in your neighborhood need to be respected. This is God’s way that is inconvertibly true.

The way you address elderly ones should be honourable. You don’t address people who are older than you the same way you address your mates. Learn to be respectful. Submit to them, humble yourself and God will elevate you.

Finally, submission is a must if we are to live as expected by God.
