THE POWER OF HUMILITY (1) – Rev Joshua Talena

(1 Peter 5:5-6) …All of you be submissive to one another, and be clothed with humility, for God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble”. Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you in due time.

What comes to your mind when you hear the word “humility?” Humble, right? When you say “this person is humble” what do you mean? How did you come to that conclusion? God honours those who have humility, so how do you get humility? First Peter 5:5 makes it clear that we are responsible to put on the garment of humility. If you honour humility, humility will exalt you and put favour on you. The greatest test of whether the Bible we carry had had any impact on us is whether it produces an increasing humility in us. Proverbs 15:33 says, “The fear of the Lord is the instruction of wisdom and before honour is humility”.

John the Baptism was a forerunner for Christ and he preached repentance and prepared the people for the ministry of Christ. He was referred to as “the voice crying in the wilderness”. He was brutal and gave no place for compromise. Jesus hailed him as a great man. He said “those born of women, there has not risen one greater than John the Baptist”. Yet as great as John, the forerunner of Jesus was, he humbled himself before Christ. He said, “He was not worthy to unloose the latchet of the scandal of Jesus” (see John 1:27).

One of the greatest statements in the Bible is said by Jonathan, the son of King Saul in 1 Samuel 23:17. He said to David, who had been his father enemy, “I will be second to you”. How many believers today will not like a showcase? Rarely do you see believers offering support to their ministries. The rarest man in the orchestra of God is the saint who knows how to support the work of God from behind! It is the humble man that can recognize who God really is and who he himself really is. You can counterfeit love, you can counterfeit faith, you can counterfeit hope, but it is very difficult to counterfeit humility. It shows in your actions and in your speaking.

Meditation: You can counterfeit love, you can counterfeit faith, you can counterfeit hope, but it is very difficult to counterfeit humility.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, baptize me with a humble spirit in Jesus name, Amen.
