(I Peter 2:21-23) To this you were called, because Christ suffered for you, living an example that you should follow in His steps. He committed no sin, and no deceit was found in His mouth. When they hurled there insults at Him, He did not retaliate, when He suffered, He made no threats. Instead, He enthrusted Himself to Him who judges justfully”
False accusation is when someone makes false statements against or about another person in a written statement or by words of mouth the intention being to damage the reputation, character and integrity of that person. From our text, you will notice that Peter emphasized what Jesus did not do when He was unfairly accused. He did not hurle insult, He did not retaliate, He did not curse or swear and He made no threats. This is not the natural way to live. When we are falsely accused, our natural inclination is to return insult for insult, but Jesus chose the other way. It is Jesus’ example that a true believer should follow:
How to Deal with False Accusation:
1. Don’t be Surprise: Patiently put up with each other because you are going to put up with a lot of nonsense inside the church so you better get used to it. Sometimes, people hear what they want to hear regardless of the facts, so we should not be overly surprised when despite our best efforts, our actions are criticized and our motives are questioned.
2. Forgive and forgive and forgive: What does forgiveness look like when your character has been assassinated? It is not easy or quick, and certainly it is not cheap to forgive. When you forgive will it change things? Not really, but it will make a huge difference in your own heart. Better to forgive than to live in the swamp of bitterness. Harbouring resentment is like drinking poison and hoping the other person will die. Unforgiveness is a self-destructive behavior, therefore, forgive!
As a believer, what do you do when you are falsely and unfairly accused? What do you do when you are falsely accused by people you love and cared for? It is one thing to be falsely accused by total strangers and it is something else when people in your inner circle turn against you. The pain is greater. In either way, whether by close acquaintance of outsider, follow Jesus’s principle.
