FORGIVENESS: REQUISITE FOR ANSWERED PRAYERS
(Matthew 6:14-15) For if you forgive men when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive men their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins
Believers often overlook the importance of relationships and how they affect their prayers. They attend church services, pray, give offerings, pay tithes, dance and sings, as well as do other religious activities, but forget to x-ray their relationship with people. They hold grudges, malice, harbor resentment and bitterness, hate, and even want others to die; because of the offence such persons have done against them. Yet they want God as well as others they offended to forgive them, but they find it difficult to forgive their fellow human beings when they offend them. Believers tend to forget the words of Jesus as seen in our opening text.
Those religious activities are good and important, but they cannot cover up the anger, bitterness and hatred, which are clusters of unforgiveness. Religious activities cannot take the place of forgiveness. Forgiveness is letting go offences without having the mind of revenge. Forgiveness opens the channel for God to hear and answer our prayers. When you pray, consider those whom you are in relationship with, check to see if anyone has anything against you, or if you are holding anything against anyone. Don’t expect answers to your prayer if you ask God to forgive you, but you hardened your heart from forgiving others.
When you pray, God will reveal your bitterness towards others. He will convict you of broken relationships. Once the Lord reveals them to you, He can talk to you about them. He finally get through to you because you are listening. You have faith that God will answer your prayers, but your refusal to forgive renders your faith impotent and ineffectual.
Child of God, assess and evaluate your relationships. Have you done wrong to anyone? Has someone wronged you? Are you still holding on to that grudge? God looks for a clean hand and a pure heart. The Bible says “A broken and a contrite heart the Lord will not ignore or despise. If we regard iniquity in our hearts, the Lord will not hear us (see Psalms 66:18). However, when you forgive others, God will also forgive you. Forgiveness is prerequisite for answered prayers.
Meditation: Forgiveness opens the channel for God to hear and answer your prayers.
